Job Description

FSRI is always looking for candidates that want to make a positive impact on the community we serve in!

About Us:

Family Service of Rhode Island (FSRI) is a comprehensive non-profit social service organization that manages, through thoughtful coordination and a shared vision, programs across Rhode Island, providing essential resources for underserved individuals, families and communities. We are proud to state that our employees are chosen for their skills and unique abilities relating to client care. Consider being a part of the BEST and BRIGHTEST team!

The Providence Children's Initiative (PCI) works to revitalize Lower South Providence and the West End neighborhoods by partnering with residents, schools, community organizations, the faith community, and businesses to connect people with needed resources that will help them overcome poverty and support their children's education and well-being. Americorps VISTA members will join a team of staff who support this goal.

Americorps VISTA members are integrated into two local elementary schools, building schools’ capacities to identify, refer, and support parents with accessing the wealth of resources that exist in the Providence area. Members will become familiar with the staff, structure, and improvement plan for Young Woods and Fogarty Elementary Schools, and build/establish working relationships with key school personnel involved in health and wellness, attendance, school/family engagement, PTO sustainability. Members will also support and expand route development, facilitation and monitoring, and recruitment, training and retention of volunteers for PCI’s Walking School Bus, which pairs community volunteers with children who benefit from support getting to school safely and on time, daily exercise, and positive relationships with caring adults. Members organize summer block party events held in the Lower South Providence community by researching past block parties to identify successes and improve upon challenges, work with a community committee to brainstorm ideas, write grant requests for funding, create an implementation plan, engage and involve community partners and stakeholders in supporting the event, and work with PCI and Development staff to execute and evaluate the events.

Members will work on two main projects:

Improving connections to area resources by becoming familiar with services, developing relationships with providers, planning awareness events, and working with parents and the school community to develop capacity (including a functional PTO) to link parents to needed services.
Supporting school attendance and daily exercise through the Walking School Bus program by developing capacity to recruit, screen, and place volunteers with the existing Walking School Bus at Fogarty Elementary School, and evaluate capacity, develop and implement a Walking School Bus program at Young Woods Elementary School.
Members will assist the PCI Project Manager with other projects or tasks as they are developed.

Successful candidates will:

Possess excellent relationship skills
Be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of community stakeholders, including residents, service providers, and decision-makers;
Be warm, open, organized, and excited to learn.
Be able to work as part of a team as well as independently when required, and be willing to ask questions as well as take risks by trying something new.
Have a passion for identifying and building upon individual and community strengths, and avoid stereotyping or generalizing.
Be creative and solution-focused, and have excellent follow through skills.
Have a sense of humor and view each and every day as an opportunity to have a positive impact on others.
Have at least two years of college experience; college degree is preferable.
Spanish speaking ability is a plus.

VISTA members also have optional life insurance available; and are granted two weeks personal leave and up to ten days of medical leave in addition to agency holidays.
